Scuba diving

Diving and snorkeling are the prime attractions for visitors. The reef around Utila is part of the second-largest barrier reef in the world. You can see all kinds of colorful tropical fish, corals, sponges, lobsters, eagle rays, turtles and all year-round whale sharks. The Caribbean waters are crystal clear and warm. Utila is known as the cheapest place in the world to get a scuba diving certification, and there are many excellent diving spots around the island: so many, in fact, that it would take a lifetime to discover them all.

Scuba Diving: A PADI open-water courses take 3 to 4 days and costs around $160 USD. The going rate for all 11 diveshops are $30 USD for two tanks. There is a $3 USD insurance fee per day, which is mandatory. The money contributes to the running of the compression chamber. A 10-fundive package costs around 125 USD.
